beryllium selenide formula is an inorganic compound made of beryllium and selenium elements. It has unique electronic and optical properties that make it a promising material for optoelectronic applications. It is a white, crystalline solid that is not soluble in liquids. It is one of the rock salt compounds, with the chemical composition BeSe. It is a semiconductor with a wide bandgap, making it a potential candidate for photodetectors and solar cells.
The semiconducting property and photosensitivity of beryllium selenide allow the conversion of variations in light intensity into an electrical current. These devices can turn alternating current into direct current, and are used in a wide variety of products such as alarms, mechanical opening and closing devices, television, sound films, xerography, and other electrical devices that convert variations in electric power into visual, magnetic, or mechanical effects.
It is also used in photographic film and infrared detectors. Illumination of crystalline selenium for 0.001 second increases its conductivity more than 1,000-fold, because the atoms are promoted to higher energy states (called conduction levels), allowing electrons to migrate. This phenomenon is known as photoconductivity.
Beryllium selenide can be deposited using a number of methods, including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), and solution-based methods. However, it can be difficult to synthesize and handle because of the toxicity of beryllium. Exposure to beryllium can cause lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses. It is therefore important to take precautions when handling beryllium-containing materials.
