chromium 3 iodide is a black solid. It belongs to a rare group of layered transition metal trichalcogenides ferromagnetic semiconductors and exhibits stronger magnetic anisotropy compared to its cousin, chromium trichloride. Due to its low cleavage energy and in-plane stiffness, bulk CrI3 can be exfoliated to monolayer and few layer films by mechanical or liquid chemical methods. In monolayer, chromium(III) iodide shows intrinsic 2D Heisenberg magnetism whereas few-layer CrI3 has a layered antiferromagnetic phase with a lower ordering temperature and monoclinic layer stacking.

In recent studies, it has been shown that the magnetic properties of few-layer chromium triiodide are strongly dependent on its layer number. Few-layer CrI3 is expected to be useful in two-dimensional spintronic devices such as magnetoelectric switches and tunneling magnetoresistance.
