A bluish-green, fine crystalline powder; hygroscopic. Reacts with acetic acid to give copper(II) acetate, Cu2(OAc)4(H2O), which crystallizes in the monohydrate form. A component of verdigris, it is used as a pigment for ceramics; as a fungicide and mordant in textile dyeing; and as a catalyst for organic reactions. It also acts as an oxidising agent in Barfoed’s test and reacts with arsenic trioxide to form copper acetoarsenite, an insecticide and fungicide. Insoluble in water, but slightly soluble in methanol and diethyl ether. It is moderately toxic by ingestion and skin absorption. UN3077 Environmentally hazardous substance, solid, n.o.s.; Hazard class: 9; labelling required.
