Aluminum stearate is the aluminum salt of the fatty acid, stearic acid. It is used in cosmetics and personal care products as a lubricant. It also increases the thickness of the oil portion of a formula and reduces the transparent appearance of finished cosmetics and personal care products. It is soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, esters, polyamides, and vegetable oils. It is insoluble in benzene, toluene, and xylenes. It is also partially soluble in chloroform and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). It has good softening, thickening, emulsifying, and opacification properties.

It is a common additive in paints and coatings for its wetting, thickening, rheology modification, pigment dispersal and suspension properties. It also prevents settling and improves the surface finish, especially gloss, of coated products. Aluminum stearates can be added to pigmented paints at up to 2% without perceptible dilution of the pigment color. The steric effects of metal soaps coat the surface of pigment particles and prevent them from aggregating (Gardner 1930).

PMC Biogenix manufactures a wide range of metallic stearate specialty additives based on natural or renewable feedstocks. These ingredients are a highly versatile class of functional additives that can be used for a variety of applications, including concrete mixes and solution-form surface application.
