Tungsten carburide is a black hexagonal crystalline system. It dissolves in hydrofluoric and nitric acids and in aqua regia but not in cold water. Chemically, tungsten carbide is stable.
Tungsten carbide is a powdery gray color with a metallic sheen. It is insoluble with water, hydrochloric and sulfuric acids but soluble when mixed with nitric or hydrofluoric acid. Pure tungsten carbide is fragile. By adding titanium, cobalt or other metals, it can be made less brittle.
