Zinc sulfide (chemical formula ZnS) is an inorganic compound, the main form of zinc found in nature. It is a white metal, a lustrous and brittle material at ambient temperatures, which can be rolled or forged into various alloys such as brass. It can be smelted at temperatures of 100 to 150degC and is a good conductor of electricity.

It is a polymorph of the mineral sphalerite, which consists mainly of iron oxide and zinc ions with significant amounts of zinc sulfate. It can be used as a pigment, as a semiconductor, for the manufacture of thin film and transmitting devices, as an infra-red optical material, and for detinning.

chemical formula for zinc sulfite

The chemical formula for zinc sulfite is ZnSO4 and it is insoluble in water but dissolves readily in non-oxidising acids. It also dissolves in strong bases, and when heated with oxygen gives zinc oxide.

Solubility is dependent on water pH, and other substances that can bind and capture the zinc ions. This makes the element available to plants and other organisms in soil; however, zinc availability depends on the presence of soluble compounds such as oxalic acid, phosphates and phytates which can enhance the absorption by plants 1.

Zinc sulfite is an important component of plant nutrition and can be used as a chelate to increase the uptake of zinc in plants. It is an essential micronutrient for many plants, and can help counter zinc deficiencies which can lead to poor plant growth, low production, and reduced yields.
