What is Magnesium Nitride?

Magnesium Nitride, is an inorganic compound that has the chemical formula Mg3N2. It is part of the cubic crystal structure. At the temperature of room, pure magnesium Nitride is a yellow-green or green powder however, magnesium nitride that contains some magnesium oxide impurities is greyish white.

The magnesium nitride’s molar mass is 100.95g/mol. The density of the mineral is 2.712g/cm3. Magnesium nitride dissolves completely in water and acid, however, it is partially dissolvable in the ether and ethanol.

The melting point for magnesium nitride is 1500 °. Magnesium nitrideis one of the metal nitrides, reacts water to create ammonia. It is often used as a catalyst. React with acid or nonmetallic oxides to create ammonium salts as well as magnesium salts.

Magnesium Nitride is a ceramic substance in nature. Magnesium nitride is highly resistant to corrosion resistance, which greatly increases productivity. Magnesium nitride has also high thermal conductivity as well being resistant to corrosion and resistance to temperature. Magnesium nitride also has a great significance because it serves as a catalyst in the creation of boron nitrogen.

What is Magnesium Nitride used for?

1. It is used as a catalyst to making nitride from other elements that have high hardness and high thermal conductivity. It also provides wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and resistant to high temperatures. The first successful creation of cubic boron nitride, it was the catalyst that was used, magnesium Nitride.

2. It is used for steel with high strength Smelting additives. Magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2) is a substitute for magnesium desulphurized in construction steel melting, which helps in increasing the density, strength tension, and bearing force of steel. Additionally, the use of magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2) desulfurization can decrease the amount of other additives, thereby helping to lower the cost of production for construction steel.

3. Utilized to make special ceramic materials;

4. To make a special alloy foaming agent;

5. To make special glass

6. Catalytic polymer crosslinking

7. To recycle nuclear waste

How do I Make Magnesium Nitride?

Presently, the primary methods for making magnesium nitride are direct reaction method for magnesium powder using nitrogen, the method for resolving magnesium and nitrogen in nitrogen plasma flow the method of magnesium coil explosion in nitrogen atmosphere Low pressure chemical gas complementing product method, self-propagating high temperature synthesis method nano magnesium nitride synthesis technique and many more.

Recently, G. Soto et al. created amorphous magnesium nitride film with different Mg:N ratios Si substrates in a nitrogen-based molecular environment through the use of pulse-laser deposition. These techniques limit the production of industrial magnesium nitride due to the high price, lengthy process and complex operation of equipment or a low yield of magnesium Nitride.

While the direct reaction of magnesium powder and nitrogen has industrial significance, the manufacturing of magnesium nitride powder requires more reaction temperatures and a longer reaction time. Also, the particle’s shape is not perfect and easy to agglomerate that is not able to meet the specifications of industrial quality. The NH3 is decomposed into Nwhich has broken bonds much more quickly than N2 and decomposed H2 may hinder the formation of MgO, which is why ammonia gas is a suitable nitrogen source. Chen Faqin et al. utilized liquid ammonia as a nitrogen source to make magnesium nitride powder through direct Nitriding of magnesium powder. The following conclusions can be drawn: Using thermodynamic analysis, liquid ammonia can react with magnesium powder much more quickly than nitrogen in the preparation of magnesium nitride. High-quality magnesium nitride powder that has excellent purity and uniform particles is made by heating it to 600, and then ammonia for 1 hour, and then heated to 800degrees, with an ammonia flow rate of 500ml/min , and the nitriding process takes 1 hour.
