The growth of uniform one-dimensional zinc nanocrystals on liquid substrate surfaces has been challenging. We report here a catalyst-free process by which one-dimensional crystals can be grown on a silicon oil surface at room temperature through thermal evaporation. This leads to the formation of zinc nanorods with tunable length and width. The aggregation mechanism of these crystals is attributed to the interaction between the metallic atoms and the surface molecules of the liquid substrate.

We use density functional theory calculations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements to investigate the metal binding in the crystals. Our results show that upon intercalation of Zn2+, a stable inner-sphere Zn-complex coordinated with water molecules is formed. This is a key step in the overall electrochemical performance of emerging divalent battery electrodes and suggests that crystal water can play an important role in enhancing the performance.
